Welcome to my website. I am an Assistant Professor in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication at Georgia Tech. I hold a Ph.D. from the Department of Cinema Studies at New York University. I was recently an ACLS New Faculty Fellow in the Film Program at Columbia University and the scholar-in-residence at the New York Film-Makers’ Cooperative. In 2013, I was Postdoctoral Fellow at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, working on the institution’s Nam June Paik archive. My current book manuscript, Handmade: The Moving Image in the Artisanal Mode, provides a theoretical and historical framework for understanding craft-based moving image practices, from painted film to new media. I am also editing, with John Hanhardt and Edith Decker-Phillips, Nam June Paik: Selected Writings (forthcoming from The MIT Press).

In November 2013, I co-curated “Computer Age,” a screening series at the Museum of the Moving Image exploring the experimental origins of digital cinema. “Computer Age” played at the Ann Arbor Film Festival in 2015, and will be traveling to other universities and galleries in the future. My writing on film and media has been published in The New YorkerAmerican ArtFilm HistoryAnimation Journal, MIRAJ, and Millennium Film Journal. I have recent essays in the anthologies Special Effects: New Histories, Theories, Contexts (BFI/Palgrave), and Abstract Video: Abstraction in Contemporary Video Art (University of California Press), and a forthcoming essay about the moving image online in The Routledge Companion to Media Studies and Digital Humanities (2016).

I’m also a curatorial consultant to the Yale University Art Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, as well as a musician, video artist, freelance journalist, and former fashion editor.

I hold a BA in American Studies from Yale University, and a MA in Cinema Studies from NYU.

My website, handmadecinema.com, received the 2015 award for “Best Electronic Reference Site,” from the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association.
